But more to the point, it's something that someone who feels that they must be revolutionary all the time would say. To dismantle old traditions for the sake of it.
I'm not saying Gene didn't have some great ideas but as an actual person, he was rather askew. And I mean that in the way of he was sort of hypocritical. He comes from the high ground morally and ethically but then does and says stuff that seem the opposite of that. His son's own documentary reveals him as not even the genius behind his own series. Gene Coon and Dorothy Fontana were two of the main writers on early TOS and were two of the people who created the iconic Star Trek motifs and storylines.
