Just this. S1 is the most popular for a reason. It's because there was a good core cast and everyone had a part to play. By s3 Mike and Lucas are just 2 sidekick boyfriends, Will has still to develop a personality outside the Upside down, Jonathan and Nancy have devolved to uninteresting married couple, Hopper is now a small town hick cop. The only character who's advanced is Dustin, and only because they've attached him to someone else. Do something with the characters people actually like.

The core problem with season 3 was that it was a brand new story arc, but they were stuck with a bunch of cast members from the prior seasons that needed screentime but really didn't have anything interesting to actually do, so they had to figure out a bunch of blatantly contrived coincidences to weave their independent threads all into together into a single story.
The way they *should* have done it would have the core cast members least all acknowledge that they're all mixed up in some dark shit together and that they're privy to a bunch of eldritch knowledge and dark government secrets, rather than continue to pretend they barely know each other and that they're all living normal lives.

There was zero reason to continue the Mindflayer/Upside Down story arc after S2 at all, it wrapped that all up perfectly. Gate is closed, lab is closed, El can live a normal life now, the end. Obviously they want to keep the same characters, because its a great cast, but they should have found some new supernatural theme for S3, rather than fight the Mindflayer again. It's already stale.
