It was legitimately unfinished. Spawn was the studios first major picture, and they weren't prepared for the potential costs. They literally ran out of money halfway into production and put out the movie. If you do some googling, there are crazy stories about the prop guns they had to use because money was so tight.

To be fair Spawn has some really great material. The overall arc of Spawn dying and be reborn as a champion of earth and trying to rebalance heaven and hell since they were both bad for mankind was absolutely kino.
Hell, I remember a mini spinoff with really adult tone (no gore or edgy violence, so it wasn't successful) with Spawn acting as a force of nature that was really good, one of the story had kind of a twist on a "I'ts a wonderful Life" situation.

The premise itself is pretty unique and he's a very versatile character in terms of where you can go with him. The problem is the book can be redundant, because there's a lot of repeating tropes.
As far as I'm concerned the HBO show did it best. If the movie is anything like that, it'll be good.

I think that's the original pitch but it's been so long that they might've changed things entirely at this point. All I know is the guy who made the original suit is making this one as well. There's also talk of a third Oscar nominee joining the project but it could just be Todd lying to get people excited.

I'm okay with this one purely because it's the original creator directing, and he's kind of stuck in a 90's mindset so I don't expect any forced bullshit in it. If by any chance the studio forces any politics into it, we'll be able to tell immediately, but I think the guy is adamant on making it by himself.
