It's only remotely comparable in jails whose counties have a major city in them. ex. Cook County. But even there the inmates are separated into districts based on crimes which is something you wouldn't get the same in prison. Prison is way more dangerous.

some jails are worse than others but in general, Prison is the one you want to avoid at all costs. South central LA gang members might fill up jails in LA county and beat up/rob other people but Prison is where all the rapes and murders happen and people have long sentences.
