Spaniard in America, that's about the same for me but for whatever reason spoken Italian is easier for me to understand than Portuguese. Maybe it's all the mafia movies and shows I've watched.

both are very easy to pick up by immersion (Spanish more so for Italian speakers), in about one month you'll be understanding basically any conversation. that doesn't mean that you can understand Spanish or Portuguese just by speaking Italian. Also actually learning how to speak properly takes way longer than that, also because they are full of false friends.

I'm a native French speaker and fluent in Spanish. I can read Portuguese and Catalan with no problem, and understand most of a text when reading Italian. When I hear Portuguese spoken out loud I can get the message, but not so much for Italian, unless spoken very very slow.

One language everyone can understand though is interlingua.

I worked in a restaurant in downtown Lisbon and would get Italian tourists daily, I could understand them without any problem, unless they were from Naples then I couldn't understand shit.
