It's funny for me because I actually have no idea what part of Europe my ancestors are from. My family was in Mexico for several generations (despite what Yas Forums believes, there are actually ethnic Europeans in Mexico), so I always assumed I was Spanish, with maybe some French and/German admixture. It's hard to know, though, because a lot of European immigrants changed their surnames to Spanish surnames. My mother is blonde, and people constantly assume she's German or Austrian. My father looks Spanish. People in my city regularly assume I'm ethnically Russian. The person who originally gave me the betaface link and instructions told me she thinks I look more like Borreby. Shit's confusing.

My family is from Los Altos de Jalisco. Both of my parents were born in a town there. My father came here young, my mother when she married him. I've visited, and I've seen a lot of light skin and blond hair in their town, as well as in the surrounding towns. On Sundays people come in from the villages, and it's almost all White people.

My father has tried tracing our records, but he gets stuck at the beginning of the 20th century. The betaface thing was just for fun, I was doing it with a friend. I've considered a DNA test, but they're known to be wildly inaccurate.

I wouldn't place much faith in consumer-purchased DNA kits. It might be fun, but my results were fairly inaccurate. Rather, I would say to look at family records.

Based on cursory searches, there's were once many troops there of the following forces:
Frenchmen
Italians
Austrians
Belgians

It seems many elected to remain, after the fall of the second empire. From there, they probably mixed with the Spanish folks in the region, or ventured further out. You're probably a mixture of all of these things.

I doubt a DNA test would be very helpful for zeroing down actual points of origin (mine wasn't, thankfully I already know, and my origins are pretty much all Mediterranean) but it may provide a clue. Just don't pay the percentages any mind.
