Apparently, politics are going to get even more polarized because of COVID-19. And despite what some people seem to think, this isn't even close to the end of the world. At the worst, COVID-19 becomes seasonal and we just learn to deal with it.

Most posters on this website are from aging democratic populations. In most democracies voter turnout is much higher in older parts of the population. The whole point of a modern poltical party is to gain leadership and then to retain it as long as possible. Appleasing the older and more politcally active part of your population is in the interest of political parties. Having a bunch of boomers die is not.
TL:DR - Modern western politcs has more emphasis on short term policy as oppose to long term.
It is not rocket science. This is also not going to be the end of it either. The way most western countries operate in terms of personal finances and politics is out of date as people spend more of there life unproductive while still carrying political weight this will only grow bigger.

Good post. Just took a voting behavior class too this semester and the synopsis for the future is just as grim. The youth of today won’t suddenly become more politically active once they reach their golden years; they’ll simply remain apolitical their entire lives. What that means is that only a sliver of the population will be making political decisions in roughly 50 years.
