Ukraine and Hungary were historically steppe lands.
We however used to have the Forêt Charbonnaire, a remnant of the Hercynian forest, and it comprised half the country. Even in the Ardennes in the 19th century they cut all good trees for industry and replaced them with pines and firs. We have no excuse.
