If the majority of the population of a former colony descends from colonists and governors of an empire that was situated in another part of the world, and considered themselves to be citizens of that empire, is it not their empire as well? Did the Romans stop being Romans when they governed Britannia and Hispania? Obviously the native Celtic and Iberian tribesmen wouldn’t be able to claim descent from the Roman Empire, at best they can claim to be influenced, but surely if the Romans had exterminated those peoples and settled the land with Romans, those people would be able to claim the Roman Empire? There’s a case to be made here that the Canadians and Australians DID have their own empires. In fact, you could argue their claims to having an empire are more legitimate than Germany’s.
