I'm not saying that Hungarians are Slavs, it's just you and them share common genetics due to historical reasons.

Around Roman times Pannonian Basin (Hungary) was settled by probably some proto-Slavs and Celts.
In 7th century what was then known as Avar Khaganate was wrecked and some Avars from that disintegrated empire settled in Pannonian Basin. Avars were Turkic people.
It was not until before 11th century when Magyars from around Ural region settled in the area. Before that they were sub-ordinate of Khazar Empire, it is from that time that the language Magyars spoke received some turkic loanwords.
Magyars then, as mentioned settled in the Basin, forming now the Hungary Kingdom as we now know it.
Interesting thing is that Byzantine sources from medieval era referred Hungary as (Western) Tourkia, thinking them as turkic people. Khazar Empire was the (Eastern) Tourkia.

Why they LARP as Huns is bit silly and debatable as real Hungarians (Magyars) came long after Hunnic Empire was destroyed. We know that it reached to todays Hungary but we do not know who were those people. Do remember that Hunnic Empire like many others were not ethnically monolithic, they contained dozens and dozens of ethnic groups.
All we know there might've been some turkic or mongol people among them, but just as well there might've been some Alans, some Slavic folk, some Iranid people from Central Asia etc. To think that all of them were (ethnically) Hun is just plain silly.
