I interpret the word "nation" to mean "sovereign state", and although there are a few well-defined notions of a state, the current gold standard is UN membership, in which case there are 193 sovereign states. If one adds the observer states of the Vatican and Palestine, one gets 195 states.

Added to these are about ten or so disputed states which are recognized by at least one UN member state, so that they have at least some legitimacy. If we draw the line here (we do), there's about 205 sovereign states. Additionally, there are several dozen non-sovereign or quasi-sovereign territories which are under the de facto and/or de jure administration of one of the above. These are sometimes uninhabited places, sparsely populated islands, or military/science/nature preserve outposts. Of these, the most populous include Hong Kong and Puerto Rico.
