il y a des français, but the plateau has a lot of anglos. it used to be the (anglo-)jewish ghetto back in the day. there are still tons of hasidim around the mile-end area

I've had this weird impression, sort of déjà vu, when I've been to London. Hearing that many much french was really weird, like the 4th dimension.

no coincidence that some of montreal's most internationally famous foods are st viateur bagel and schwartz’s smoked meat. montréal has an especially large jewish population and historically they were almost all in the plateau. these days some of them have moved to other areas like westmount or côte-saint-luc, and the plateau has a lot of hipsters. very similar to williamsburg in new york in that regard

idk maybe it depends on the particular neighbourhood. i lived in the plateau for a while at a couple of addresses and almost never had occasion to speak french cuz i was always interacting with anglos

None of those are true, maybe the 1st one but I wouldn't call it looking down on you, just mocking some of the differences that's all, I'd say this is more true . I have heard so many times French people here mentioning and laughing of our accent and expressions like we are the weird ones of the bunch, even if they are the minority. Idk if it's clear but anyway that just seems completely delusional to me. It's like if you talked with a Québécois in France and he kept saying "omg you guys speak so weird wtf you are so funny when you speak"

Probably because your media (like TV, films) doesn't reach us a lot, like Hollywood did with English. But it's definitely changing over time.
Many years ago, Québec was not even a topic, now many people want to visit or stay there.

The French integrate well in Montreal and get along fine with the locals in my experience. Quebecois and Frenchmen making fun of each other is just friendly banter.

I can't speak for Francophones in Montreal, but I have a lot of experience dealing with Americans, Brits, and even Eastern Canadians coming here to my province and having Dances with Wolves-esque noble savage characterizations of the Natives. It's fucking weird, and completely foreign and hostile to the people living here. They're exactly like any other impoverished minority, and not in any way similar to some weird undiscovered tribe to come gawk at. If you want to come to Western Canada to experience Native culture, just go visit your nearest ghetto instead. You'll get the same fucking experience in Tower Hamlets or Harlem.

Maybe one of your posts is where I read that before, maybe not. But that's what I had heard. Indeed it seems a bit stupid if not offensive.
