Portugal could afford not giving a fuck about European affairs due to being isolated from the rest of Europe, so they put as much effort into their Empire as possible (Portugal actually had a ridiculously high percentage of colonial migration, which would have made the New World even whiter if Spain had similar percentages)
Unlike Portugal, we got fucked hard by the Habsburg marriage, because the Habsburg kings kept dragging us into stupid wars against the rise of Protestantism in fucking Germany (most of the Latin American gold and silver went into funding these wars).
Had Portugal and Spain been united by Miguel Da Paz, instead of an Habsburg, the New World would probably be much, much more Iberian, since Castile would have pulled a Portugal.
