The misleading numbers on Covid

Every day the DOH releases new numbers of dead due to Covid, supposed recoveries from the disease, and total cases. There was some rejoicing recently when the government count of recoveries finally exceeded Covid deaths.

Don’t believe the numbers. While there may not be an outright intention to deceive, the numbers are far from the truth.

The truth is no one knows the true numbers. But they are much larger than what official stats show.

The numbers the DOH releases are just the tiny tip of a huge iceberg of deaths, recoveries and cases that the government has not counted or cannot count.

How about all the Covid deaths of people who were not “confirmed cases?” Not counted.

The thousands of people who recovered from Covid but did not have to be hospitalized? Not counted.

And the possible millions of infected people but who have not been tested? Not counted.

So don’t be misled into thinking that the relatively small numbers in the Philippines reflect anything near the true situation.

The truth is a lot worse than we think.

So take news like this with a healthy dash of salt:

BREAKING: DOH reports 218 new COVID-19 cases, 25 new deaths, and 52 new recoveries.

This brings the totals to 5,878 confirmed cases, 387 deaths, and 487 recoveries as of 4pm today, April 17. #COVID19PH
