Hey Yas Forums,

I'm an american currently attending a college in China for CS (freshman).
China is pretty cool, and my Mandarin got pretty good, but because of the pandemic I was forced to return to America.

There's a possibility I cannot return to China, so in the event that does happen, where does Yas Forums think I should head to for uni?
My mandarin is pretty good, and I can speak Japanese and Korean to a basic extent, I have no problem with learning languages.

I'm pretty set on East Asia, so China, Japan or Korea, any advice?

Is East Asia legitimately more exciting than the West? I saw a Canadian streamer on Twitch cry because she said Canada is boring compared to East Asia

I can really only speak for China, but in general, unless you live in a big city like NY, East Asia is a ton more exciting for young people than North America.

There's just more shit for young people to do, it's cheaper, and public transportation is more developed so it's less of a hassle to get there.

IMO the impression is heavily skewed due to people mainly visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, Osaka, Hong Kong and Taipei, which are indeed more exciting than the vast majority of Western city.

But Shenzhen is boring af for example, so East Asian doesn't automatically translate to exciting.

It's like a 1st tier city, I was in a T1.5 city in China and was never ever bored.

Just get a group of people and go eat hotpot, afterwards get a round of baijiu get drunk as fuck and sing love songs in KTV.

I work for Huawei and spend months at a time in Shenzhen. It is one of the most boring cities on earth, we expats always go to HK other cities on the weekends.

I stayed in Shenzhen for two months. It's a boring city with boring activities and a dead cultural scene, even the Chinese will agree.

These are enjoyable activities but that's not what makes a city fun.

Additionally Shenzhen is kinda soulless, but that definitely does not represent other cities in China, like say Chengdu Suzhou or Chongqing.
It's pretty significant you're a college student and the legal age for alcohol back in the USA is 21.

I think what you are trying to say is you're socially awkward but being a white person in china gives you a gravitas that allows you to have a circle of friends that you'd never have in the US. Don't give me that "fun" nonsense.

Get over yourself, HK is just not as fancy as it's portrayed, and even Hongkongers don't understand why HK has this fancy reputation in the west.

If anything I had even more problems in HK because they thought I was a local and talked to me in Canto

The actual only annoying thing in HK is my mandarin is useless, some get openly hostile if I spoke it. Some nice pubs though, some fat welsh bloke owns a few and they are all a laugh to be in until 4.

It may be because you're white, I'm Asian and people automatically switched to Mando when they realised I wasn't a Cantonese.

How hard was it to learn mandarin? How long did it take? What were the hardest parts to learn?

Pretty much, yeah.

2-3 years of intensive classes to get fluent, you can't learn it casually unless your wicked smart. By intensive I mean 20 hours a week at least in a formal classroom setting, with plenty of time for revision.

Mandarin is not really that difficult, but it is time-consuming.
My method was to look at mandarin webpages, and repeatedly copy any hanzi i didn't know, took me about two years to get to comfortable reading fluency.

To speak well is a different issue, you need to go to china to not sound akward.

The best parts of HK aren't even HK island and Kowloon tho.
