Why did Bulgarians expel their Turks in the 1980s? I could understand if they did it just after regaining independence, but they were already assimilated and didn't undermine Bulgarian sovereignity.

Of course economically leaving Bulgaria for Turkey wasn't a bad idea as Turkey was a much wealthier country but still it was an unnecessary move from the Bulgarian government, Bulgaria has lost a big chunk of its population, including future professors, engineers and doctors.
