not muslim i don’t really like dates at all. but i had gulf arab friend give me dates that were sticky with like honey on them. Those were really good i hate the dry ones. do you know where i can buy them?

where did he buy them from?
if they were from the gulf they were probably ajwas with some sort of sweets on them.
if it was from here maybe it was legitametly just medjool dates with honey on them. Other than that there are 100 different possibility. You'll probably have to just buy a date box with a variety of dates and try every one until you find the one you're talking about.

If they were spherical probably ajwa with something sweet on it or maybe they were just really sweet ajwa.
I have some ajwas from saudi with chocolate and nuts on them for example.

Rarely, I have these date “truffles” which is pretty much just ground dates in a ball with some other stuff. It’s alright.
I usually eat dates by themselves or with a drink of milk. Then I pray maghreb salah and then I eat dinner usually.

His favorite was the ajwa apparently, that’s the only Hadith I know about dates. Not sure how authentic it is but out of all the dates from the gulf ajwas are definitely the only S tier. IMO cali medjuls are better though.
He also liked lamb shoulder if you want to try that.
