The earliest evidence of human occupation in the British Isles occured around 900,000 years ago at Happisburgh on the Norfolk coast, with stone tools and footprints probably made by Homo antecessor. Homo antecessor is an archaic human species of the Lower Paleolithic, known to have been present in Western Europe (Spain, England and France) about 1.2 million. H. antecessor was about 1.6–1.8 m (5½–6 feet) tall, and males weighed roughly 90 kg (200 pounds). Mesolithic Britons were closely related to other Mesolithic people throughout Western Europe. This population probably had pale-colored eyes, lactose intolerance, dark curly or wavy hair and very dark or black skin.
Britain had been permanently connected to the Continent by a chalk ridge between south-east England and northern France, but around 425,000 years ago a megaflood broke through the ridge, creating the English Channel. The extreme cold of the following Anglian Stage is likely to have driven humans out of Britain altogether. For the next 140,000 years, no humans lived in Britain. Britain was then unoccupied until 60,000 years ago when modern humans reached Britain by land bridge or boats. The Last Glacial Maximum 20,000 years ago drove humans out of Britain again. Humans returned to Britain towards the end of this ice age during a warm period about 13,000 years ago. Humans spread and reached the far north of Scotland during this period.
