We had to, a planned invasion would have costed 10Xs more lives on both sides. Nuking Japan actually saved more Japaneses than it killed. They should be thankful that we ended the war quickly instead of dragging it around longer accumulating more misery. Nuking Japan was a simple show off power. Stalin turning on Japan was much more of a deciding factor in Japan's inevitable surrender. There was no need to nuke Japan from a humanitarian standpoint.
