You can just as easily say that the simplified version reminds you of people and, in mandarin, reminds you of the pronunciation.

But desu with computers it shouldn't be a problem anymore. The CPC could revert to traditional characters if they wanted to.

You type with latin letters, the possible characters pop up and you then choose the right one.
In Taiwan they use a Chinese phonetic script to type instead of Latin letters.

You can fuck with it if you have windows already. I think there's a function somewhere to change your language keyboard. Remember how Yas Forumsutists were able to make wide Latin letters? Those were Japanese romaji letters or whatever.

I mean it's not really a coincidence, it's because in Chinese they would be differentiated by tones. Japanese also doesn't have the n/ng distinction so there's that.

It also has to do with sound changes in Japanese. In classical Japanese "shou" could be しやう "syang" しよう "syong" せう "seu" せふ "sep," but in modern Japanese they all merge together into しょう. "Kai" in classical could be かい "kai" or くゎい "kwai," "shin" could be しん "shin" or しむ "shim" etc. etc.

There's a passage in 1984 about sucking all the meaning and nuance out of language (doubleplusgood) so that people lose the capacity to disagree with the state. That's what Chinese language modernization is all about, in the hands of the current program anyway. It's a horribly inefficient written language to begin with but that doesn't exclude the above correct political point.

Simplified is just changing the cosmetic appearance of the characters. The grammatical or semantic structures aren't changing.

Simplification was meant to help litteracy. Same thing happened in Korea and Vietnam, except they flushed the whole pictographic system, maybe the same should've happened in China. Japan also simplified Chinese characters under Burger occupation btw

Even "traditional" characters have long lost all pretense of being faithful to the original pictographic semantics, both are sufficiently abstract to necessitate non-trivial studies into their (mostly supposed) etymological significance, simplification just make the whole mess less of a burden to use in everyday life
