Might also have something to do with retirement plans? Like maybe other Europeans rather keep an big bank account for their retirement while in Germany it is pretty common to pay for an private retirment plan were you pay money every month during your years of work rather than have the money and your own bank account and get additional payments to your state retirement money each month later on...

If you for example pay like 200€ each month while other people just put it in an bank account that over 35 years would be like 84.000€, more than the difference between Germany and France or the UK.

Private pensions have been the norm for middle class people in the UK too, it is now mandatory for all employers to enrol employees into a private pension scheme and pay a certain amount into it along side the state pension.
