Traditionally you fast before, that's why you feast on easter (or the day after).
You're supposed to fast with no food multiple days before easter itself, and before that, the entire month you're supposed to eat as little as possible.
Currently most believers simply eat fist, and don't eat meat.
Then when the easter feast itself comes they eat meat.
