I've had a lot of interesting taxation and welfare debates both online and IRL with Americans, and I've eventually come to notice that we grew up in a seemingly completely different cultural and political narrative than they did. They don't really share our sense of "we", and often don't take in consideration the larger socio-economic implications of various tax- and fiscal policies, and tend to argue more from the perspective of their particular household. However, the result of that debate can still be interesting, if not somewhat inconclusive.
I have no empirical data to back this up with what so ever, though.
