That phenomenon is called "informal ustedeo" and only exists in the Colombian inland, Costa Rica, Venezuelan Andes and southern bordering states, some places in Panama and a few places in northern Ecuador; yes it not uncommon to talk with our parents using usted.
The catch is that it isn't formal conversation. In this region of the world we use usted in informal situations mainly
