I don't defend german politics per se but most European countries are free loaders in one or the other way. EU only has a future if it fixes that.

It keeps our politicians from going full socialist, which gives you a good idea about how our politics are. That's about it, in total it's a postmodern showcase of contemporary brrr economics and it will sooner or later collapse into a second-world tier region and stay there until a radical change in politics occurs.

How so? Protectionism is also effective against those. I am fine with the living standard of the 70s if that means everybody in the country has a local job.

If an European country had to negotiate bilateral trade deals with USA and China, they would have a very weak bargain position.

We're in far weaker position in trade negotiations through EU, since you have to balance out 27 different administrations' goals, and that balance can be easily disrupted by increasing a tariff rate like Trump has done often.
