What is the most livable big city in the USA? Which city is generally safe, has decent public transit, and the cost of living isn't crazy high?
I've been rotting in the suburbs my whole life. I want to be where the stores are, the restaurants, the jobs and salaries and actually have stuff to do. I'm willing to up and move as soon as Coronochan blows over
Best large US city?
Boston
>"cost of living isn't crazy high"
>Boston
Why do I want to live in Miami so much? Every time I think of moving to another city I always want to go to Miami
Not as high as New York or San Francisco. Salary is commensurate, and you get to live in a nice area not some stupid gross boring city
Philadelphia
Last time I was in Philly I was disgusted. It was like Detroit
Huge mistake, please don't do it
Redpill me on Miami. I just like the perceived laid back coastal vibe, the proximity to the beach and the surprisingly low cost of living
Seems like it checks all the boxes
NYC
Is Seattle and Portland good?
Portland is literally R*ddit: The City
And Seattle has homeless people everywhere
Seattle is gorgeous but the cost of living is just getting higher and higher due to the tech boom. Plus it is really annoyingly liberal, coming from a lib myself. Portland seems nice, but I’ve only visited
Yeah, it's too bad that it's getting too expensive to live in
And I just can't stand militant liberals. I don't care if you're lib or not, just leave me alone
If your not a pussy, or pay a bit more to live in Center City
The cost of housing is better than almost all large US cities
Laughlin nevada
Philly seems cool. I just wish there weren't so many uppity nigs
Is New Orleans really that bad?
bampity bamp
Livable and walk able are oxymoronic
Why?
Phoenix, good food, large and close to nice landmarks, and you gain the Mexico vacation option which is a big bonus
san diego is pretty nice
How is Atlanta? I grew up there and really enjoyed it (well Decatur) but don’t really know what it’s like now.
because walkable in america means poor and ravaged with homeless people. Nobody wants to ride the train unless they have to.
How is Phoenix so fucking empty? For a city that big, where are the people? Or is it deceptively big in that it's just super spread out is all?
Also 120F is something I'll have to pass on
Millions of people ride the trains in NYC, DC, Chicago, Boston, etc. and never think twice about it
Any Florida anons here? What is Tampa like? Looks comfy as hell to be honest
It's super spread out and is one of the fastest growing states. It's only hot in the sun and even then it's not actually too bad as there's no humidity and the shade is cool and comfy.
and it's terrible. I fucking hate taking the train and huddling into a smelly cramped space for 30 minutes every morning
It's part and parcel of living in a big city though
which is why I plan on moving out west where it isn't miserable
Spread out is shit though. Just look at LA, it's basically just suburbs smashed together that spreads for miles and miles
What city? Come to SLC, besides harsh winters it's pretty based
why is that a problem from a personal standpoint?
More spread out means more sitting in traffic having to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere
how is that any different from taking a bus or train?
You're not the actual one driving, being in the traffic, dealing with other shitty drivers. On a train you just sit back, play on your phone with earphones in and wait for your stop.
Driving in city traffic is miserable and soul crushing if you have to commute everyday in it.
Phoenix
Is it good enough to make up for the weather?
I disagree. On public transit i have to share my space with other people and that sucks, i can't listen to my own stereo, I can't decide to stop somewhere on the way to wherever i'm going, and I can't enjoy being by myself.
It's fine, but the cost of living is higher than it used to be but not as bad as other cities
Phoenix isn't a city, it's the epitome of "collection of suburbs" places.
To each their own.
There are people who would give anything to not have to sit in city traffic and commute and just be able to sit on the train. But I absolutely see why it's nice having a car and being free in that way
fpbp
I can't talk shit because I myself am homesick for South Florida, but to anyone who says "Ugh, I wish I could live in Miami", I cannot stress enough it is not the 80s.
The problem is there isn't a single city in the US that's 1) compact 2) well connected 3) good in the walk-bike-bus department but also 4) clean 5) safe and 6) affordable. You always have to make one or two compromises, in shittier cities even more.
Minneapolis is surprisingly good in walking, biking and transit (best rated biking city in the country actually) and it's safe, clean and affordable, but it's not that big and nowhere near anything, plus some people may have an issue with it being a frozen hell in winter.
Philadelphia is larger, has great connections, is still relatively affordable and is decently walkable, bikeable and bussable, but frankly it's a bit of a shithole.
Chicago is even larger, still okay connected and surprisingly affordable for what's like the third largest city in the US I think, but it's not that safe and clean.
Arlington VA is really nice in all other regards, but it's super unaffordable. New York City, Jersey City, Seattle, Boston, Honolulu, they're all compact and walkable but likewise unaffordable. What's said about Philadelphia probably goes similarly for Pittsburgh. You always have to make a compromise, and your only choice is which one to make. Maybe Newark is one of the better compromises. Mind you I'm only working off numbers here.
>Cleveland
The weather is good though
110+ is miserable
What about Tampa? My wife could easily get a job there as she has a connection there. We were discussing it, but neither of us have been to Florida before
There is absolutely nothing good about Ohio
Fuck off beaner
I'm really trying to decide between Atlanta and Charlotte. I could move to both and they're both so similar
bamp ameribros
You don't feel it at all. It's only miserable if you're in the desert
pittsburgh
Any city on the west coast of Florida is good as the east coast here in Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm has been going down to shit the last few years.
Interesting. I've been looking into it and just by being in a different city she'd make 10-15k more a year and Tampa is generally pretty cheap COL-wise.
Damn, we might just do it. How are Florida people generally? Are they South enough to be super friendly?
Is Chicago really that bad? I mean, assuming you avoid the nigger neighborhoods?
Probably more livable than hypothetical Yas Forums: The City
