There are two takes on this. You can take it strictly as a metaphor and understand that it's "world peace" as is actually conceivable, or you can take it literally and assume that they will just magically all work things out. Since the Bible is really just one big metaphor for "don't be a fucking shitter" I'd lean toward the former. Of course, the church are a bunch of luddites and prefer to interpret things more literally out of self interest. So it comes down to who you choose to believe, and how much of it you actually believe to be true (versus how much of it is just a pleasant fairy tale)

I far as I know the Jewish idea of the messiah is that of a fully human warrior king descended from King David who will resurrect and form an army of the dead to conquer Israel, rebuild the Temple on the Holy Mount, and force all nations to bow before Israel, creating a world where the Jews rule for eternity. Compared to that Jesus falls a little short.

The BOOKS in the Bible were devised first and foremost as a rulebook to avoid illness and catastrophe. Secondly, these books are the guidelines to live as part of the jewish clergy. It was the priests who were in charge of drawing the "uncleanliness" of the people and make it disappear, i.e. sending it back to God to have him see what he does with it.

As a rulebook, there are "technical metaphors" that can only be understood in the context of the ancient clergymen which is lost to time, and a great deal of it literally, since it made sense in the context of the people living at the time.

In this case, it is easy to picture the animals being friendly, you know it won't happen, but it's improbability and ease to relate the concepts tell you it must be taken literally. There's really no abstractness here. The Messiah is the Man, made of flesh, that will perform miracles and bring absolute peace and order to Earth.
