The American dollar is a worthless currency. You keep printing more, while it's not actually backed by anything. And there is also no real demand for it, as you're an import economy. People would rather have euros, which are less prone to inflation from printing, and buy goods from europe, which has multiple strong export economies.
The demand for the dollar is driven by the oil industry, which is probably one of the biggest industries in the world, where oil has to be paid in dollars. This is enforced by the American military and partners.

But there are also historical reasons why the USA is active in Europe. After all, if the commies had taken over Europe the USA would be very unsafe in a communist world.
So for a long time America believed they should convert countries to a democratic political system, to ensure the world became more safe for democratic countries.
In NATO for example would fall apart, then smaller countries and eventually larger countries that feel any military threat will rush to other powers in search for allies. That's also something the USA wants to avoid.
That a country like Russia or China can influence the policies of nations that USA has to deal with.

Slow population growth and us being already developed doesn't leave space for much growth, other than unifying.
If we did unify our foreign policy and armed forces, however, we could be a superpower. All that's lacking is political will and a charismatic and capable leader or two. Maybe some foreign threat to wake us up.
Russia has the GDP of Benelux. Its nuclear stockpile and its military, which is slowly suffocating the rest of the country are the only things it has going for it.

Also, if people stop artificially inflating the dollar price through the oil industry, then all the goods America imports become more expensive. It will also become more expensive to produce your own products, so it's a downwards spiral. Which can be quite a pain for an import economy.

Thanks to our central banks we transitioned from a system where money is backed by gold to a system where money is created out of thin air when banks add a debt to their balance (quite literally: When you ask for a loan or mortgage banks add a debt on their balance and create the corresponding amount of money. The only thing keeping them from creating an infinite amount of money is that they have to pay interest over it to the central banks. So they have to make sure people can actually pay that interest).
This has given governments much more control over its currency, at the cost of it being a worthless piece of paper that people only get because they trust there is demand for it. But in the early days people didn't really fall for it, so artificial demand had to be created to avoid the dollar price from falling.
