The main reasons Hitler wanted us on his side were:

1) more manpower to throw in during the French campaign, at the time the French army was considered the strongest in Europe, and Hitler expected them to put up a much bigger fight

2) a navy. Germany was still suffering for the WW1 limitations about navy size, and apart from the uboots they didn't have a navy strong enough to counter the royal navy and the French one.

3) access to Africa. Cutting the oil supplies that arrived to the UK from Iraq was vital, and Germany didn't have colonies in North Africa.

Scenario number one never happened, because France crumbled like an old baguette. In scenario two and three Italian contribution was abysmal, our Navy was decent but no match for the birtish, also our admirals were very big britboos since many of them studied in English academies, and mostly anti regime and hated mussolini (the Navy was a branch that was always very cold towards Fascism for reasons too long to be explained here) so let's just say they didn't really put 100% of their effort. And about the African campaign, everyone know how it went, Italian officers thought they could just zerg rush their way until Baghdad, without realizing 10 tanks are much more effective in modern warfare than 10000 infantrymen.

Italy contributed zero to Germany War effort, if anything we made things even more difficult because the Greece invasion opened up yet another useless front where Wehrmacht troops needed to be headed.

By the way, German army (Heer) also had nothing to do with Nazis for most of war, retaining a lot of institutional independence, hence they performed well.
Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine, which were both founded by Nazis in practice, were comedy gold once the initial shock wore off, especially the latter, who were brutally raped by British whenever they tried anything that wasn't attacking convoys with submarines.
Every aspect of German society that was permeated by Nazis became shit.
They are literally one of the most incompetent and despicable group of people in human history. Save for few examples, actual Nazis (and not "fellow travellers") were among the best Allied saboteurs of German war effort.
