Bokmål is basically norwegafied danish, as Oslo is the administrative seat of the country it's historically had a lot to do with Denmark.
Nynorsk is an amalgamation of western dialects so it's most prevalent in the west. The guy who made it paid little attention to northern dialects so it doesn't reflect how they speak and thus they've got little interest in using it.

That's the eastoid cope. He did include both eastern and northern dialects. Nynorsk was also greatly influenced by gammalnorsk (old Norwegian), wich is/was the actual Norwegian language.

there isn't that much of a difference nowadays imo because of the watering down of nynorsk.
But reading nynorsk in older books reads like a truly different language from bokmål.
It's really beautiful too which is why the best poetry written in Norway is written in slightly archaic nynorsk
