Their per capita death rate is already 3.4 times higher than ours and they currently have 429 people in intensive care. We have 96 and that number declined by 3 today while Sweden's increased by 9%

The main goal of quarantining is not to beat the virus but to spread the number of severely ill over a greater period of time to put less stress on the health care system.This will unquestionably save countless of lives, especially in poorly developed and high density areas.
Stockholm is already bursting at the seams and will soon have an acute ICU shortage. Netherlands started out with the herd-immunity route like Sweden and they're getting absolutely fucked right now. 1339 deaths and still rapidly increasing. South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and others have already shown that it's possible to severely limit the spread with strong enough measures. With extensive testing and tracking few cases will slip through the cracks. Those in the high-risk groups should still be self-isolating until it's clear the government can track the spread down to an individual level though.
The goal of quarantines is to contain the virus, you separate the sick from the healthy.
What we have are "stay at home" orders which are not the same as quarantines. The sick are only separated out if they are so sick they need to go to hospital.

That's not the case here. Norway and Iceland have started widespread testing of asymptomatic people, these people will be given orders to quarantine if their test is postive. If you're going to contain the virus you need to be testing people with zero symptoms and multiple times. If not it will be impossible to track.
We have a literal field hospital which hasn't been opened yet. If the situation was as severe as you claimed, quarantine would be enforced

A field hospital has little value when your country is lacking health workers, respirators, ventilators and protective medical equipment to take care of everyone during the peak. I really do hope Sweden is prepared for what's coming and that this approach pays off in the long run. Few signs of that so far though and Anders Tagnell, the state epidemiologist, has already admitted that Sweden's approach failed to protect the elderly. Regarding medical equipment, time will tell. Sweden has domestic production of Respirators that manages to keep up. Medical force hasn't been put out either, volunteers and doctors from the private sector are assisting. We've had more volunteers than necessary. if your population gains herb immunity it means that the virus is freely spreading in your population. asymptomatic carriers of the virus can still spread the disease. no country would want to accept Swedish tourists or residents without a 14 day quarantine and extensive testing. there might not be a travel ban to sweden but it's going to be very difficult for swedish people to travel if every other country is using a containment strategy.

19% increase in deaths today (1 more since that was posted), 9% increase in ICU patients. You're at 429 ICU patients. Sources from 2020 say you have anywhere from 480-530 ICU beds. That capacity will be maxed in one day at this rate if that number is correct. Add 450-550 intermediate care beds and this growth needs to be stopped/slowed significantly within 10 days before you have to start turning down severely ill patients.

herd immunity is only viable when you have a vaccine. you are still subjecting 60% of your population to infection and the resulting hospitalizations and deaths. and that would still allow the infection to move freely within the population. you would have to permanently isolate the weak and old because they would always be under the constant threat of infection. the virus will not cease to exist if 60% of the population has already had it, it would merely slow down the spread to the few who don't have it. there is no certainty that once you become infected you gain permanent immunity.
