It’s a bit complicated, the Italian state has a complex relationship with the church (it was a sin for a catholic to participate in elections until the fascist era because the Pope was butthurt we took his territory when Italy unified)
In general I think churches are mostly a money sink, since they cost a lot to maintain. The Church however has a lot of palaces in often really nice areas of our major cities they can rent, and they do get a tax discount for being a religious organisation (which is bullshit imo)

When I visited the Vatican city I took a tour which guided us through "the 2 most important kilometers out of the 8km of the vatican museum". It was an endless corridor of incredibly detailed works of art. The corridor itself was a work of art too.
