i visited a uni exchange student freind in montevideo, supposedly the most developed city in latin america, just like europe, most expensive city in latin america, in the canada of south america etc etc and it was a dire shithole. everything was dirty, derelict, there was graffiti everywhere, you make one turn off the main street and suddently you're what looms like a detroit ghetto or scooby doo ghost town etc.

we went to buenos aires from there for the weekend, beforehand all she was telling me was how much of a shithole it is, how run down it is, how shit argentina is and how uruguayans only visit because it's cheap. and it ended up being a gorgeous modern city beautiful architcture and everything was like a third of the price of things in montevideo.

sounds like you stayed in the bad part of montevideo while only visiting the touristy or trendy side of buenos aires. Both cities are nice and shit depending on where you are, and the same is true everywhere in latin america
