I make about 3000 a month, and I don't consider myself poor but I am certainly lower income. I own a car, but share an apartment, and have a modest discretionary income for entertainment or savings. I would like to get my own apartment without a roommate but I would have much less discretionary money and would basically be living paycheck-to-paycheck. Cost of living in my city is moderate, no where near the cost of Toronto or Vancouver but there are definitely cheaper places.

I earn $270/month for a full time job and the only way I am able to live is because my old parents still suppoert me and feed me using their pension.

That's how it is in New York or San Francisco. In a flyover state you can rent a place for like $800 a month.
