malaria was noticed but not understood until the 1880s, it used to be common in europe but by the time of industrialization most of the swamps the mosquitos lived in were drained and it wasn't as common then

In the 1500s/1600s malaria was a thing in the area I marked on the map here, at least according to a book I read called 1493.
I don't know how or when they got it under control.
