schools are also closing down here, but thx to our federal system not every federal country does that so far. so far only the saarland, berlin and bavaria has closed all schools for at least 4-6 weeks starting next week monday. baden-württemberg and nrw will probably follow this as well today from what i know. they also thinking about stopping all mass gathering with more than 100 people for the next 6 weeks. after this pandemic there will probably some political consequences here in germany. our federal system is just too lazy for situations like this.

As I understand it, the countries with lockdowns hope to a) catch all the active cases right now and slow down the spread, b) ensure it remains on relative slow burn by both reducing the number of active cases and maintaining some preventative measures (social distancing, health checks, more work from home etc.). This also ensures the healthcare system can cope with the cases as they come instead of collapsing on itself and letting people just die.

We are in the 'slow it down' phase. Schools here will shut, high volume public gatherings will be banned. The idea is to time it correctly so the peak falls at the right time.
