Humans specifically evolved the behavior where we get depressed, tired and antisocial when we are sick, so we can avoid spreading the virus. So the virus has to trick us into thinking we are healthy so we can spread it.
Viruses that kill burn bright, for a small time, then die off. Viruses that are just mild annoyances live a very long time and infect many hosts. Those are the successful viruses.
This coronavirus we have now is at like 0.5% death rate, it has long legs.

So when you look at all infected, not just the ones that are bad enough to go to a hospital, the death rate is lower. But 0.5% is still very high. The common flu is 0.1%, and its a very serious killer.

Only Korea thus far actually tests all people, and not just the sickest, and their death rates fluctuate between 0.4% and 0.6%.
