Honestly, I dont think so unless the South splits off again. I was there for a month in Saigon, Ben Tre province and Da Lat and the culture is just not able to advance much further. The communuist party has propaganda posters put up everywhere, the are few traffic systems, morals are low and the government is in the back pocket of China. South Vietnamese are less communist than the middle and northerners are, but still drone about. Just apply actual traffic laws with separate lanes for cars and scooters, build industry and stop acting like bugs. If youre son is a loser but your daughter is accomplished the son will still be treated as an angle, the daughter isnt considered part of the family, she leaves with the man her parents chooses. In conclusion, Vietnam may have the potential to become first world but I cant see it happening, or it would at least be second world like mainland China.

Calling the banh mi a sandwich is dismissing its origin and downplaying how good it actually is. Noting the Nguyen is the most common last name isnt an argument. The traditional clothing is traditional its just your opinion. Vietnamese were happy to stop using Chinese characters for the language when the Portuguese guy invented it. THAT calligraphy is ugly because its modern crap in a circle, but the stuff that is carved around pagodas that look like Chinese characters with Latin letters is pretty cool.
