why isn't it called "Norwayland" why not "Belgiumland" why not "Franceland" why not "Swedenland" why not "Denmarkland"
why are germanic so inconsistent?
If Ataturk wanted to westernize the ex-Ottoman empire, why didn't he call it Turkland why did they change their country's name to Czechia instead of Czechland
>Dans land I tried looking that up and I couldn't find anything. The etymology pages only mention Denmark (Den-mark)
Grayson Scott
why are germanics* so inconsistent?
Landon Nguyen
Don't worry, Eurabia will fix it. Then it'll be Denmarkistan, Swedistan etc.
Daniel Robinson
>why isn't Germany called "Germanland" It is in our language.
Levi Rogers
oh right I forgot about that Deutschland
Gavin Price
Germany: from latin Germania Belgium: from Latin Denmark: den mark (borderlands) Norway: no idea Sweden: no idea
Jaxson Moore
>Eurabia >stan Liberals were never wrong when they were saying the more ignorant you are the more racist you are. Arabs have nothing to do with, nor do we use, the stan suffix. Only Iranians, Turks and places+regions Turks conquered (except arab regions) use the stan suffix.
>Turks call Poland Lehistan > they change it to some kind of Polonia abomination > they still call polish language Lehce
Nicholas Morales
>Almanya which comes from French Allemagne anyway.
Grayson Harris
It's the mark (frontier region, from a germanic word meaning "forest") of the Danes. There were other marks in Charlemagne's empire, for instance the Spanish Mark, whence Aragon, Catalonia and Navarre came.
Cooper Watson
Which in turn comes from the German phrase 'alle Mann'
William Ortiz
Yeah, but iirc you English-speakers used that too. People like Shakespeare used both German and Almain to refer to the people living in this shithole.
Jaxson Stewart
which is the same as the English "All man", if I'm not mistaken? Cause that'd be alpha as fuck
don't you think that Almanya is actually a cool name?
Easton Kelly
Slavs and Celts are just as inconsistent. Hel the Slavs even have two countries that basically have the same name.
Colton Myers
We originally called you all Dutch. Which is why we have Pennsylvania Dutch country. It changed when the Dutch fought against the Spaniards. So blame the Spanish.
Jose James
Maybe because Norway isn't germanic
Adam Fisher
we do?
Nathaniel Edwards
Personally I don't care much about it tbqh. I live in the area inhabited by the "original" Alemanni but nobody gives a shit about how the country is called. If anything, the zoomers in the entire country these days refer to the people in the rather derogatory term "Almans" introduced by the Gastarbeiter Turks, with it getting somewhat mainstream.
Kevin Ortiz
Yes, Slova- uhm, Slovenia
Jackson Taylor
Because Switzerland, thats why.
Jeremiah Watson
in danish it's called tyskland, which is germanland
I appreciate informative posts like this, thanks. French posters are some of the best on the board
Juan Bennett
We just call it Německo, meaning "The land of dumb people".
Hunter Robinson
I really don't know which universe you live in where a nasal alveolar sounds the same as a voiceless velar plosive. In a syllable with a completely different vowel to boot.
Xavier Brown
The endings of both names are literally identical (Slo...ia). At least in English.
Jeremiah Martinez
*endings and beginning
Anthony Peterson
Its not that hard we used to call ourself diets or duits too. Duits diets or deutch just means of the people or smth like that. It is was germans and dutch used to call themselves. But for only germany it stuck around.
Jonathan Turner
What's the origin of the name Lygia for Poland?
Joshua Kelly
Why they call it Thailand instead of Siam or Muang Thai
Dominic Foster
Yes
>Slovenia's name means the "Land of the Slavs" in Slovene and other South Slavic languages. It is thus a cognate of the words Slavonia, Slovakia and Slavia. The etymology of Slav itself remains uncertain.
>The first written mention of name Slovakia is in 1586 (German: In Liptau, bei der Stadt Sankt Nikolaus in der Slovakia).[20] It derives from the Czech word Slováky; previous German forms were Windischen landen and Windenland (the 15th century).[20] The native name Slovensko (1791) derives from an older name of Slovaks Sloven what may indicate its origin before the 15th century.[20]
Owen Mitchell
I'm pretty sure a fuzzy match over country name strings would return a lot of results with a higher coefficient... Most probably with Austria and Australia in first place.
Gavin Perez
Somehow the Arabs now call the Austrians Nimsa, probably borrowed the term from you.
Oliver Ward
Yeah it means people (as in your own people not slavs and celts).
Jacob Hughes
Nah. In Czech it´s "Slovensko" and "Slovinsko". Literally single letter of difference.
Daniel Ross
based. but explain
Nicholas Hall
the Thais are massive fags to be honest
Logan Williams
Gays.
Liam Wood
I thought it meant mutes because the western slavs couldn't remotely understand the german tribes they encountered.
Camden Evans
we call it something like Al-Namsa
Benjamin Lewis
sweden sverige swerighe svearike swerike what is svear, people from svealand what is rike, it means reich now shut up
Owen Brooks
Why didn't mother aborted you when you were a fetus?
Lucas Powell
"Netherlandic" being Dutch in English also has to do with our history. We (Netherlands and Germany) used to be the same country (HRE), but Netherlands is geographically closer to England and also had more contact with each other due to sea trade and such I think. So they refered to them as "Dutch", a direct cognate of "deutsch". Eventually the Netherlands became their own country, but they remained to be refered to as the Dutch.
Nathan Anderson
Not the other German guy, but it always gives me a headache when I see "slovenčina" and "slovenščina" right next to each other in some language sections.
Ethan Ramirez
