In the case of Aztecs, yeah. Other civilizations put up more of a fight, like the Mayans, who resisted conquest for over a century. Also the chichimecas (basically barbarians in Aztec terms), nomadic cultures fought for about 100 years. Still, you're right, the Spaniards made them fight each other a lot.

In Germany, we only know little about the pre-columbian history of the Americas.
Of course we know about the fate of the Aztecs and Mayas, the Toltecs too aren't unknown, but I've never heard about the Chichimecas.
What I've always found most interesting is the style of art of Central America, especially reliefs. I cannot really explain it, but it is so strange for me. Those reliefs tell of a well elaborated and rich culture that is in all meanings so far away from me.

Chichimecas is literally a nahuatl word that pretty much means barbarians, it's how they called the tribes north of them that due to their nomadic ways were deemed too aggressive and uncivilized to deal with. It encompasses various tribes, and among them the Zacatecos were some of the fiercest fighters that opposed the Spanish, even they recognized them as being the best archers in the world. They fought nearly naked, no armor whatsoever, and a Spanish guy said something to the effect that "If a Zacateco archer aims at an eye and hits the eyebrow, he calls it a miss", owing to their insane prowess with stone age tech and weaponry.

Mesoamerican lore is also pretty badass, and you have several gods that would give Lovecraftian abominations a run for their money. The Toltecs are sort of like both the Greeks and Romans to the Aztecs, they were their spiritual and cultural predecessors (though they were descendants of the Olmecs in genetic terms), and had a massive empire that even the aztecs never managed to match.
