Truth is the germans had an operational limit in the Atlantic as to don't go beyond certain line and attack ships, whether they are american or british. At some point the american escorts extended their operational limit way beyond their hemispheric line in protection of british convoys and started attacking german submarines without previous warning and no state of war yet while the german subs were under orders of not retaliating. So if anything, the taunting was the other way round.
