In the town I grew up in the local private and grammar schools were actually full of Pakistani and Indian kids whose parents were rich doctors or lawyers that bankrolled them through education.
There is no hope for people like me who come from bog standard working class families. I am the first person in my entire massive extended family to ever go to university. Now I'm at university, and I am a social outcast because 90% or more of the students here are rich, preppy private school kids. And the ones who aren't are brown nosers who adopt upper class mannerisms. I am excluded from mainstream social events because I refuse to become some pompous social climber or to put on a posh home counties accent.

I'm not an anti-capitalist. But Britain is only a partially capitalist society, in many ways it is almost post-feudal and aristocratic in its makeup. If we were a genuinely free market, meritocratic society then things wouldn't be so bad. Although I do think private education 100% should be abolished as the British have proved they cannot use it responsibly (Funny how the US has plenty of private schools, and yet the graduates of those schools do not dominate politics, the law, the media in any way unlike those in the UK do).

I was one of I think about 5 kids in my year who went to a Russell Group university, and you can forget Oxbridge because nobody in a decade from my school ended up even getting an offer from there, it was that bad. You don't know what it's like to grow up in that environment where your family, your school, your neighbourhood, literally fucking everything is dragging you back and lessening your chances of success.

What you can say is that being upper class and privately educated is a big advantage and that upperclass, privately educated people are over-represented amongst professions. Less than 10% of the uk is privately educated but they'll make up say 25%-50% of new graduates in those professions. So it's a big advantage, but still a huge % of people entering those professions are not privately educated. The majority in fact.
There is so much social mobility these days. There are very few niche, private companies, mainly catering to very wealthy people who only want to employ other posh people of the same background. These might be tiny wealth-management funds for super-wealthy , old-money families. Outside of that , every company recognises that they won't be competitive if they don't hire the best people regardless of what secondary school they went to.
So don't lie. It's not impossible to succeed if you didn't go to private school, it's just a lot easier if you did.
