We had a train hostage situation in the 70's. And the military police literally shot 15000 bullets through the train with their machine guns.
They knew the criminals were in a certain cabin, so they emptied their machine guns at that cabin. While at the same time shooting between all other cabins, so prevent any movement on the train. After which several swat teams entered the train at several points.
They originally wanted to grenade the hostage takers, but the police commander veto'd that plan.
