It's not really to do with fatality rate, its more to do with infection rate. The more people it infects the more chance it has to mutate into a deadlier or sometimes alternatively, less deadly strain.
Theres already reports that more aggressive strains are appearing, I dont think that means the virus is gonna get bumped up to spanish flu tier, but this is beginnings to how it happens.
