I'm well rounded with Anki, and started a couple of days ago doing the Hanzi version of RTK. Right now I my retention for the next day and the day after is quite mediocre relative to everything else I have studied. I guess because it's something completely different from facts/lists/concepts. When (or around what amount) did people start seeing an improvement in character retention , or at least the feeling it became easier?

Give it a year or two after you're done with the deck and have been reading a bunch to feel comfortable with it all. You'll still look up stuff for years after guaranteed though.

Anki doesn't help you memorize words after you've gone through thousands of them, only actually reading them in some context you care about will stick.
