Zaheer's techniques of bending came pretty close to something special. Ultimately though I think ATLA didn't need to do anything special with it and the writers of Korra just lacked the imagination to do anything really interesting.

Because airbenders are already op as fuck. Aang could casually create wind blades that were able to cut through solid rock, fly faster than any balloon and roll around at neckbreaking speeds with his air bubble.
Hell, take a look at how many firebenders Gyatso was able to kill before he was taken down, and keep in mind these weren't normal firebenders but meteor fueled super saiyan firebenders.
The other nations should be thankful that the air monks never tried to take over the world.

can remove the oxygen from water or air, nullifying them, extract them and add it to its own power
can extract the carbon from earth by turning it into carbon dioxide rendering it useless

Imagine what the Avatar could do with a little creativity. Concentrate oxygen and hydrogen in the air with water bending and air bending, spark it with fire. Big boom.

Fire gets Lightning and explodey head powers.
Water gets blood, plants, mud, ice, clouds, pretty much anything involving water.
Earth gets dust, lava, metal, anything involving minerals
Air gets... air. Creating ozone, hyper-oxygenating a room, and removing air resistance would all be cool uses of air, but none are new elements or different objects like all the other special bending moves.

Korra made it Flight.
It's dumb but there you go, Air's super special bending is flight.

Using periodic elements in Avatar is too confusing and broken. Stick to the classical elements.

The closest thing to soundbending was that squad from Naruto and they were nothing but jobbers.

He technically can blood bend with manipulation of oxygen.
Also airbending would have force-like properties(minus the mind control).

Rules of bending are all over the place. Sometimes it require dancing, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it require you to be near, sometimes not. You could 1 shot anyone with any bending by being creative and having the fact that there really are no rules other than plot reasons.
