What was up with the uncanny valley/Elsagate-ey vibe this season had? It was bizarre. No SpongeBob season before or after felt like this.

>uncanny valley
Post screeenshots

It was the first post-movie season, so that might have had something to do with it.

I have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

New writers coming in after the movie who weren't familiar with working on the show resulting in a much stranger atmosphere before they got comfortable.

That scene is supposed to look bizarre, post a screenshot with normal sponegbob

Season 4 was sorta okay OP.
What you're describing is Season 6.

I guess when I say uncanny valley, I'm not talking quite so literally. What I mean is that the season had a sense of familiarity, in the sense that it felt like Season 3 in a lot of respects. But at the same time there was something off about it. Like, you could tell something was different. Even Krusty Towers, which felt straight out of Season 3 was noticeably different. What makes Season 4 different from the other post-movie seasons is that it still feels like pre-movie SpongeBob in some ways. Season 5 doesn't have this quality because Season 5 feels completely different.

Season 6 was far enough from classic SpongeBob that it wasn't unnerving. What made Season 4 weird was that it felt like a worse version of Season 3. Like if Season 3 was written by aliens who didn't know what made SpongeBob a good show.

>I guess when I say uncanny valley, I'm not about what uncanny valley actually means.

But to answer your question, odds are they either used different animators, or changed the character designs, or lost or gained some budget money and adapted in kind.

Uncanny valley isn't just about robots. It's anything that feels familiar, but has something about it that makes it different enough that it feels off. Uncanny valley exists in music too. I'd argue songs played backwards fall under the uncanny valley.

From what i found it just talks about robots

That's the most commonly used definition, but like I said, I think it applies to other things as well.

S4 > S3

Nice bait (I hope).

I mean they are both good

Season 4 had some all right episodes, but it also had a lot of terrible episodes, such as Good Neighbors. Season 3 was golden age SpongeBob.

>It's another episode of zoomer or baiting! what is it this time?

Krusty Towers, Skill Crane and Good Neighbours made it all worth it

Everyone hates Good Neighbors.

I don't.

>YOU DON'T DESERVE TO WEAR THOSE FEZZES! AND STOP CALLING ME PRESIDENT!

Season 4 is alright, it's just a more ok version of season 3. Season 5-6 are pleb filters. They're oddly dark/ominous in tone. Like what the fuck was with spongehenge? The weird part is they didn't dumb it down to make it appeal more to kids, they literally went insane. I feel like the new seasons are a good match of modern and classic SB though but seasons 5-6 are soft spots in my heart.

>Good Neighbours
trash

I mean, the second episode of the season has Mr. Krabs without his shell and it's quite unpleasant to watch.

I watched the season 6(?) episode where Pearl throws a slumber party today, does anyone else's dub change the root beer to just "beer"?

I remember reading that some of Season 4 had originally been written for Season 3. That might explain it.

I actually know what you mean OP, and I've narrowed it down to the fact that the episodes shift away from interactions within the central lineup (Spongebob and co get into goofy situations) and heavily relied on bizarre one-off characters that would be the backbone of the plot while the main lineup interact "around" them.
Episodes like Skill Crane, which don't rely on this formula, are still generally good.

The over-reliance of gross-out and introduction of gore was also a big misstep, a lot of episodes just felt mean-spirited and tonally different.
