Too many Rick and Morty fans INSIST that there's more to the show than what they present in each episode. Every viewer should've learned not to expect a serialized overarching story as the series main focus after "The Rickshank Rickdemption" resolved the Galactic Federation takeover in one fell swoop. The aftermath—the divorce season—was just an experiment the writers wanted to play around with; some good came out of it, and some bad came out of it. Oh, well. Back to high-concept sci-fi rigamarole.
Rick and Morty is an episodic comedy-adventure, with only bits of continuity and specific episodes that are tied to each other. I'm gonna laugh if people start complaining when the Tammy/Summer battle doesn't turn out exactly like they wanted to. Just sit back and revel in whatever craziness the writers chose to do.

This. The jokes still land and the adventures are still creative and fun. The only real difference is how cynical the family's gotten, but that isn't enough to ruin the show when the whole thing's already kinda cynical to begin with.
