It's a direct degradation of the medium when too many cartoon showrunners can only pull inspiration from anime, and inspiration often means, "I'm going to rip this thing off from anime and make the personality more annoying".
I want to see more stuff like Ed Edd n Eddy or even Gravity Falls that use real-world/real childhood inspiration on top of artistic inspiration to form a personal project. "I grew up watching Pokemon so I wanna make my own Pokemon" is such a boring way to do it. Why would I watch the poor man's version of something when I have the internet and can go watch the original?

Children don't HAVE childhoods anymore. It was destroyed by smartphones. Why play with toys & explore your neighborhood when any kid with a phone can watch pornhub. People like to say the internet killed Toys R Us, but it's true for the wrong reason. Kids just don't do what they did in the 90s & early 2000s. Modern show runners can't relate with what you're talking about because it no longer exists. There's no inspiration to pull from.
