Cartoon wise, try 12Forever it just without the robots and more about escapism. Oh, and a self-absorbed redhead

Cartoons aren't that "social" unironically. They are either unfunny comedy garbage or a trashy political activity

The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius is a good start, plus The Metabarons by the same writer but with Juan Gimenez.

Xenosaga is metaphysical sci-fi. NGE is hackery with a religious veneer.

Sounds like you didn't get it.

Not a comic but abstract sci fi with strong 90s feel

Evangelion isn't really scifi. Its a character study. The story of Evangelion is mostly about Shinji, his social traumas, and him failing to grow up enough to succeed at the heroes journey when the world needs it most. The scifi giant-robot-vs-angels-with-biblical-imagery stuff is all just background. Its flashy and it adds some extra spice to the situation, but Shinji's story could have been told in a setting with no scifi stuff going on at all and it would have lost very little in the process.

If you are focusing too much on the Evangelions themselves you are missing the crucial parts that made the show actually worth watching.

Evangelion is Ultraman/Mazinger Z fused Together with Kaiju/Tokusatsu/UFO.

And while all of that's true, its also irrelevant. That's all surface level details, puff and flash. Its not the meat of the story.

The Angel's DO NOT MATTER to the story except that they provide a situation that adds extra stress to Shinji's life and raise the stakes for his actions because he is thrust into the an incredible responsibility. The fact that the Angels look like they do, or shoot energy crosses, or anything else doesn't matter. Replace them with the Festum or power rangers bad guys or giant evil teddy bears and the story still works just as well.

If you’re focusing too much on being a pretentious wanker you might make dumb comments.

>OP specifically asks what aspects of NGE he wants to see in other comics
>faggot starts lecturing OP how he enjoyed NGE in the wrong way

The Angels are a metaphor dumbass.

Higher power meme brain.

If the show is based on Freud was the whole Kaworu stuff about Shinji fighting off his homosexual tendencies?

No.

Cartoons are made for literal children (

Well, it's hard to find any that suck as much as EVA, but Girls is your best bet.

>eva thread
>the 2deep4u fucks emerge from the woodwork
every fucking time, goddamn.
the show is 24 years old. it's been discussed to hell and back hundreds of times. you're not adding anything new. shut the fuck up.

With only a couple of exceptions, even 'adult' cartoons in the west are functionally the same as children's cartoons, they just have more blood/swearing/sex humor. But they are still basically the same simple comedies.

The action adventure cartoon genre over here is all but dead, and the few examples of what we DO get are notoriously japan-influenced. Samurai Jack is literally about a samurai, Steven Universe pays more anime homages than is worth counting, and so on.

Xavier's renegade angel

If what you want is Metaphysical Scifi, try The Outer Dark. A space opera setting where magic is real and its what makes the spaceships work. As in, the FTL drive for the ship is literally a containment chamber for a captured pre-history god that you occasionally have to make blood sacrifices to in order to get it to work.

French comics. The French have tons of good sci-fi. Suck I can't read any of it.

...Why is everyone talking about cartoons when OP specified "comic books"?

Twelve Forever, that's close for a cartoon that I can think of, op. Just without death, robots.

Don't listen to anyone who says Twelve Forever.

I think we have our best answer right here.

Based and feet.

Why is OP asking for a different medium than the primary medium of the one he listed?

I saw the Jlullaby drawing of that girl getting fisted elbow deep by that red skin suit babe and it's quite my jam on that regard.
